The Hilgreen-Lane Organ:   Chapter Three

Scanned Newspaper photo of the destroyed Hilgreen-Lane Organ

In June of 1972, after a week-long series of reported break-ins and vandalism in the Canton community, three youths had gained access to the Methodist church. The youths destroyed the antique organ and vandalized the church. After destroying the organ, damaging the Communion Table, and tossing chairs and other items in the Sanctuary, they continued their rampage to other parts of the church and destroyed a piano, and other church property.  This continued until a neighboring resident heard the sound of "breaking glass" and called a nearby church member to report the incident.  While investigating the matter, Rustie and Maemie McDaniel reported observing 3 youths exit the building by one door as they entered another.  Less than a week later, the youths were taken into custody and signed statements admitting to the destruction.
Sadly, there was not much that could be salvaged from the Hilgreen-Lane Pipe organ, but a few sets of pipes.    <<News article>>
